A Bridge Between Mechanics and Thermodynamics: An Exploratory Study of Entropy in Damped Oscillators

Authors: Joshua Dizon

We show that the decay of the energy envelope in a lightly damped harmonic oscillatorcan be explicitly connected to the increase of entropy in the surroundings. The result isan exploratory bridge between mechanics and the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Theframework is extended to the electrical analog, the series RLC circuit, where the sameexpressions hold with 2ζω0 = R/L
